Cooksey Communications, a mid-sized strategic communications firm with nearly 30 years representing Texas’ leading businesses, organizations and governmental entities, seeks a leader for its Professional Services Practice Group.

For decades, Cooksey has supported leading professional services clients across Texas with an array of strategic communications and marketing needs. Much of our work is centered around media relations, but also includes helping clients with high-impact community engagement programs, executive thought leader positioning, award nominations, marketing materials (digital and print), special event planning and other related needs.

The ideal candidate should be able to draw on at least 10-15 years of agency, journalism or in-house (corporate, government or educational) communications experience, relevant skills and sound judgment in order to lead our team serving Cooksey’s prestigious legal, financial services, architecture and engineering firm clients (primarily based in North Texas) and to confidently advise and assist those clients with sophisticated PR and marketing strategies.

Our Professional Services Practice Group currently has one Assistant Account Executive and will be adding another Account Executive or Senior Account Executive quickly to handle much of the day-to-day work. Both positions report directly to the Practice Group Lead, who will be responsible for managing the team and ensuring accountability. The Practice Group Lead’s primary duties will also include client retention and growth in this sector, overall account strategy, crisis communications and sector-relevant thought leadership activities to support Cooksey’s business development efforts.

The ideal candidate desires a fast-paced agency environment and the opportunity to work chiefly on professional services client accounts, while also collaborating with Cooksey’s other practice group (public sector and real estate/development) leaders from time to time, consulting on their crisis communications, PR strategy and planning, media training and other high-level needs. The Practice Group Leads are part of Cooksey’s management team, along with the agency partners and Creative Director, who meet biweekly to discuss account activities and needs, business development and more.

The ideal candidate is a “go-getter” who is smart, professional, confident, outgoing and self-motivated, delivering bold, strategic thought and polished work product, with strong attention to detail and an in-depth knowledge of the DFW business, civic and media landscape.

Candidates should relish the challenge of monitoring and interpreting news, identifying key influencers, formulating communicating engagement strategies, interfacing directly with community and business leaders, and translating clients’ nuanced messaging into meaningful marketing outcomes.

  • Strong team management, communications, media relations (traditional and digital), writing and editing skills

  • Possesses a bachelor’s degree in English, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field, with a GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Minimum 10-15 years’ experience in a PR/marketing agency, journalism and/or in-house (corporate, government or educational)


  • Provides LMA (lead, manage, accountability) for the Professional Services Practice Group and a team of at least three, which is likely to grow over time
  • Has primary responsibility for retention and growth of 4-6 retainer and/or project-based accounts in the professional services sector
  • Drives overall account strategy for each of the client accounts served by the group
  • Counsel clients on PR/marketing strategy and ad hoc needs, and provide hands-on assistance with crises, media training and coaching, and other communications needs
  • Develops or oversees the team’s development of a wide range of content and materials including strategic communications plans, community engagement programs, press releases, bylined articles, executive remarks and presentations, award nominations, and advertising/marketing material content, including managing projects in collaboration with Cooksey’s in-house Creative Department
  • Performs sector-relevant thought leadership activities (blog writing, speaking, professional organization involvement, etc.) to support Cooksey’s business development efforts
  • Collaborates from time-to-time with Cooksey’s other senior-level practice group leaders to consult on crises, PR strategy and planning, media training and other high-level needs
  • Ensures the group consistently secures high-value media coverage and achieves other important client PR/marketing objectives and KPIs
  • Ensures the group develops and delivers timely, comprehensive client recaps and reports
