Located on Texas’ celebrated Brazos River, midway between Dallas and Austin, Waco is the largest city in Central Texas. Its central location, coupled with a reputation for friendly hospitality, has made Waco famous as the “Heart of Texas.” With a population of almost 140,000, it is the 25th largest city in the state. Waco’s economy is thriving with health care and social assistance sectors, retail trade, and educational services. Baylor University, as well as several technical and community colleges, are also major employers and the city’s tourism sector continues to be a vital part of the local economy.

Reporting to the City Manager or designee, under limited supervision, the Director of Communications and Marketing leads the operations and staff of the Municipal Information Office (MIO) through effective planning, staff management, and resource allocation and serves as the City’s Public Information Officer (PIO) and primary media liaison to ensure that the City’s key messages reach the public. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working in a municipal environment and experience in marketing, public relations, and branding. This position will be responsible for the social media and communications for the entire City (25 departments and 35 social media channels), so it will be essential that the candidate have experience maintaining a strong, consistent message across multiple platforms for a large, diverse organization. Experience with crisis and emergency communications is essential and familiarity with municipal broadcast and public programming is highly desired.

The selected individual must hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field. In addition, the selected candidate must have at least six years of increasingly responsible experience in journalism, communications, and public relations including two years of supervisory experience. Public sector experience is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
