Our efforts have significantly increased awareness of Dallas locally, nationally, and internationally, and have resulted in Dallas being recognized as one of the top convention destinations in the nation and the number one visitor destination in the state of Texas.
The Communications Manager will oversee the planning, implementation and execution of VisitDallas’ communications and media relations plan. This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications. This position is tasked with publicizing Dallas as one of the country’s top travel destinations, fostering awareness of the Dallas brand and new city developments, and encouraging media to cover the city in both trade and consumer outlets.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (individual duties, assignments, and responsibilities required of the position)
Communications Management: 
  • Strategic PR Planning: Create a cohesive long-term public relations plan in alignment with overarching organizational goals and provide strategic oversight of PR outreach, media events, media calls and press material development.
  • PR AOR: Responsible for directing and managing the domestic public relations agency of record.
  • Media Missions and Media Relationships: Proactively pitch Dallas on the road through missions, Travel Texas, sales trade shows and on own. Maintain effective follow-up with media and build lasting relationships for coverage and potential future press trips.
  • Media FAMs: Plan and successfully execute media FAMs, working closely with sponsoring partners, area attractions and venues to create creative and hand-tailored positive experiences for visiting journalists. Maintain and keep updated media FAM recap reports.
  • Content and Media Lists: Work to maintain and develop content that can be used in pitching and overall media strategy. Examples include: press kit updates, development highlights, itineraries, press releases and creative collateral that can be used for FAMs, media inquiries and on missions. Keep up-to-date media lists.
  • Executive Communications and Media Inquiries: Manage communication for executives and senior staff, including drafting talking points, letters and quotes. Build rapport with local reporters to tell the overall VisitDallas story, while improving awareness and importance of tourism and of our organization to the community. Respond to media inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Budgeting and Reporting: Manage and maintain overall PR budget and metric reporting. Establish and implement PR metrics that tie in with broader organizational goals. Measure and evaluate leisure, consumer, and trade media coverage, and determine key messages and alignment to strategy.
  • Partner Relationships: Strengthen and grow existing and new relationships with local PR contacts at venues, hotels and attractions through newsletter outreach, happy hours, networking events, etc.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: (special training, certifications, college degree, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, public relations, journalism or equivalent experience in public relations/communications field.
  • 5-7 years of media relations experience required.
  • Knowledge of Dallas and venues, tourism industry, social media, blogger relations, media monitoring tools is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (technical, communication, interpersonal, etc.)
  • Detail-orientated, organized, interpersonal, written, phone and computer/skills.
  • Strategic mind with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; flexibility, positive attitude and attention to detail a must.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: (overtime, travel, physical demands, and conditions)
  • Position functions in an office environment
  • Evening and weekend time commitments, as well as limited travel are required.
