The Chief Communications Officer will work in close consultation with the President/CEO and take leadership for recommending and getting approval for all essential communications activities. Responsible for both internal and external communications and leads comms staff as well as direct and lead both employee comms, external comms and all social media, including web. Expertise in strategic communications, government affairs, litigation support, issue management, crisis communications and media relations essential. Must have ability to give expert counsel on government relations and provide thoughtful advice in developing and implementing community relations activities. Duties include representing the organization with external audiences and managing key relationships, project teams and special assignments.  Responsibilities do not include lobbying or fundraising, but knowledge of both helpful. Duties also include serving as a media spokesperson, preparing media info and a broad range of written materials, managing social properties, providing advice and counsel on best practices and recommending strategies for enhancing the agency's reputation among key stakeholders. Must be able to identify opportunities, challenges, threats and emerging issues and work as part of a senior leadership team. Some travel will be required, and individual must be a self- starter with excellent professional judgement. Background should include 10+ years of experience and 2+ years managing a staff. Strongest candidates will have a degree in journalism/strategic communications/public relations and be bilingual in English/Spanish. Proven negotiation and decision-making skills and a track record of being able to respond to tight deadlines and unexpected changes are advantages. Position based in Austin.
