The University Communications Specialist works as a member of the Marketing & Communications team. Responsibilities include overseeing the university’s content management system and content contributors; and creating and distributing web and news content through various channels including newsletters, email communications and social media.

The Communications Specialist supports a targeted web content strategy and helps produce content accordingly; ensures that all digital communications are optimized for key conversions and follow rules of grammar, visual design and quality assurance. Supports the Communications Team on public relations and media relations activities, and promotes and markets university special events.

Leads campus content management system (CMS) and web writing training sessions and engagement strategy to ensure 100 percent of campus websites are actively being populated with up-to-date content, news and events. Evaluates content presented by campus web maintainers. Provides solutions for correction or improvement. Works with internal clients to determine their web needs, and then collaborate with team to create solutions that meet those needs.
Works with Communications Team to build relationships with university faculty, staff and students to identify faculty, staff, students and topics for internal and external promotion. Identifies story angles that will be desirable to position the university and implements successful strategies to promote them through various communication channels including media relations, social media and internal communications.

Edits and writes content to populate new stories, calendar events, website pages, display ads, social media content, emails and banner ads to support university’s strategic goals. Optimizes web content for search engines and key conversions.
Executes a biweekly email newsletter for faculty and staff, along with review of other university email newsletters including the Ram’s Horn (alumni) and Ram Life (students).
Creates content calendar for promotion of university news and events on social media. Work with team to post and monitor university social media channels.
The University Communications Specialist is both an internal and an external brand evangelist who understands and is able to persuasively tell the “Smaller. Smarter.” brand story in a variety of contexts and settings.

Editing and writing duties include evaluating and reviewing content that comes into the CMS content approval queue, modification and preparation of already-existing content for the web, writing copy for various university websites, and writing of feature and news stories for inclusion in any of our various digital channels.
Monitors, edits and corrects site content for customer communications within editorial style guidelines and follows rules of grammar. Also ensures traditional content and collateral is integrated into the online experience when and where possible.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in advertising, communications, creative writing or a related field with at least 2 years of copywriting experience, agency experience or corresponding experience in university website communications or experience working in a university marketing & communications setting with demonstrated experience writing for the web.

The selected candidate will demonstrate an understanding of user experience, search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM). Must have expert written, verbal, analytical and organizational skills.


Job qualifications:

Experience with news writing for the web and editing for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy.
Advanced copywriting knowledge, including the ability to meet deadlines, strong attention to detail and web writing experience with measurable results.
Strong understanding of website technology, social and email marketing and social media platforms.
Translate creative brand strategies into engaging and meaningful copy.
Take ideas and solutions from concept to implementation in a way that motivates readers to consider the brand, product or idea.
Write for multiple digital channels
Conceptual mind able to collaborate with marketing teams, creative teams and clients.
Experience taking ideas and solutions from concept to implementation in a way that motivates readers to fall in love with a brand, product or idea.
Proven strength contributing to the creative process and providing strategic solutions.
Professional copy editing and proofreading experience.
Extensive understanding of Associated Press (AP) style guidelines.
Experience proofreading for website branding standards (fonts, spacing, padding. etc.).
Ability to follow internal branding and style guidelines to the letter.
Knowledge of proofreading marks and ability to create concise electronic mark-ups.
Knowledge and proficiency in coding standards-compliant, accessible HTML and CSS, a plus.
Knowledge of basic information architecture principles; understanding of the technical aspects of website production; understanding of the tools provided by our CMS system and their limitations.
Ability to work individually and within a team environment.
Experience in managing a workload including multiple projects and production schedules required.
Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and to consistently meet deadlines while maintaining a high attention for details.
Ability to plan, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks.
Ability to explain technical aspects of system to those who have limited technical knowledge.
Ability to work with, and to provide technical support to, internal clients. Handles support calls and e-mails from web content contributors.
Ability to develop appropriate training and documentation for diverse constituencies including those who have limited technical knowledge.
Ability to work individually and within a team environment. Experience as part of interdisciplinary teams, including Developers, Visual Designers and Writers
Experience working under tight deadlines and bringing strong attention to detail.
